THE SCANDALIS STORY OF THE SMORE

How the S’more Was Invented and Why It’s Still Popular Today

Who doesn’t love a good s’more? The combination of chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers is heavenly, and it’s no wonder this treat has been around for over 100 years. We’ll explore the history of the s’more and why this campfire classic is still as popular as ever today.

But, before I start, did you know that the real beginning started with sex? Yup! A Presbyterian minister named Rev. Sylvester Gramn invested a boring snack cracker in enjoying. His mission was to save people’s souls from damnation because people were too promiscuous! He wanted to ensure that people’s thoughts were farthest away from any sexual thoughts! Crazy Huh?

But, just wait until you hear about the marshmallow!

Ancient Greeks first used marshmallows for medicinal purposes! The gooey substance made a great bandage! It is also thought that smore’s started as a Victorian-era funeral cake, which was specially prepared upon the death of a loved one.

Then the best of it all!

In the 1890’s it became a popular treat in resort towns with teens! It was a treat they would share around the fire, much like we do today! But, it was seen as too scandalous how they would share each other sticks. Newspapers at the time called them an “excellent medium for flirtation.”

It wasn’t until 1927 that an Girl Scout Guidebook came out with a recipe for the S’More! It was published in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts! The recipe included graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars roasted over a campfire. The Scouts likely invented this sweet treat as a way to make camping more fun for girls.

This is where the name may have originated and shortened because people would refer to the treat as “Some More”!

S’mores Today

S’mores are just as popular today as they were back in 1927. In fact, according to a 2018 study by Hershey, 97% of Americans have enjoyed this classic campfire treat at least once in their lives. And why not? S’mores are easy to make, require minimal ingredients, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

There are even variations of the traditional s’more that include different types of chocolate or flavored marshmallows. No matter how you enjoy your s’more, one thing is for sure – this delicious treat is here to stay!
