FALL CAMPING TIPS

FALL CAMPING TIPS FOR YOUR COMFORT

Fall is here in Wisconsin, and it’s a fantastic time to travel and see all the fall colors! The best way to do this? Camp, of course! These tips will help your fall camping be enjoyable!

CHECK THE WEATHER

Before you leave, make sure to check the weather where you are going for the days you will be there! Be prepared for the temps and possible precipitation. The last thing you’d want is to be underprepared! We’ve had this happen, and it’s no fun at all!

BRING LAYERS

Layers are key!!!! Bring at least enough layers to say warm and comfortable!

  • Base Layer (long johns, leggings, smartwool faves…etc)
  • Middle Layer (your regular clothing options)
  • Top Layer (sweatshirt, pull over, cardigan…. etc)
  • Jacket
  • Rain Jacket (because you never know)
  • Hat
  • Scarf
  • Gloves

STAY ACTIVE DURING THE DAY

If the weather is good, go for a hike around the campground or check out the park’s map for trails. Or check out the All Trails App to find a trail that fits your activity level!

If it’s a crappy day, go to a movie, check out the local events and attractions like breweries or wineries!

HAVE A GOOD SLEEP SYSTEM

Have a suitable sleeping bag! I use a down mummy-style bag that is rated to 0 degrees! I also brought my thinner one just in case it was too warm.

Lay a wool blanket on the floor of your tent to keep the cool weather from seeping in. You can also bring another warm blanket to lay on top of you at night if your sleeping bag isn’t warm enough. Or to use around the campfire.

Keep your sleeping clothes in your bag while you aren’t wearing them. Keep your day clothes in a dry bag OR the car to keep from getting damp!

If your feet get cold at night, bring some comfortable wool socks to wear at night! Or I have put hand warmers at the bottom of the bag, and that works amazingly! You can also heat some water and put it in a water bottle to keep in your bag or to just warm it up before hopping in!

RELAX BY THE FIRE

This is by far my favorite thing about camping! Any time of year!

If there is no fire ban near you, have a killer fire before heading to bed! Check Wisconsin Fire Restrictions here! Warm-up enough by the fire before heading to bed!

IMPORTANT – Make sure your fire is totally out before heading to bed! No embers should be seen or felt!

EAT LIKE IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY!

Eat your favorite fall meal! A hearty and warm meal will warm you from the inside! The best reason to put your diet aside and eat your favorite meal! The make or break it for a good night’s sleep!

My go-to meals to warm up are:

  • Cast Iron Lasagna
  • Spicy Tacos
  • Hearty Stew
  • Curry

WARM-UP IN THE MORNING WITH SOMETHING HOT

Warm-up in the morning with some hot chocolate, hot tea, or coffee! Have a quick system to heat up water like an MSR Stove System or Jet Boil! Go to Coffee for us lately has been the Copper Cow pour overs! They come with some great creamer and it’s delicious!

Keep your drink hot with a good mug like a Hydro Flask one!
