CAMPING at MALAEKAHANA BEACH | Oahu Hawaii

April 7, 2020

Windy Malaekahana Beach camping on Oahu Hawaii.

On our way to our campground from Honolulu, we found a rad cliff to stop at for some amazing views! The ocean is so freaking beautiful, I could have stayed there all day! The mist from the ocean creates the most beautiful haze all times of day!

Before we set up the tent we rented, we stopped for some tacos for me and a burrito for Justin! I have been trying to find some amazing fish tacos while in Hawaii and I found them! I wish I would have written down the name because now I can’t find it online. It was in the shopping center near the Polynesian Cultural Center. Which by the way looks awesome! Next time!

We also had to get another doughnut! Which we ate after setting the up hellish tent. The best way to celebrate!

This tent was rented off of Airbnb from someone I highly DO NOT recommend! I won’t link it, but I do suggest if you want to camp on the islands to rent a car with a popup, borrow/buy a tent or rent one of the cabins they have. This tent was WAY too big for the beach and way more than we needed.

To get this tent set up I had to climb into the tent to hold up the center pole, while Justin worked to get the stakes in. It took us about an hour to put it up. With the nearly 30 mph winds, it was a struggle.

But, Malaekahana Beach Campground is an amazing beach! It’s a local beach so as a non-local we were a rarity. I couldn’t recommend this campground enough!

Justin went swimming while I watched the surfers and the sunset! The Sunsets on these Islands are amazing! No wonder they make such a big deal about them!

The beach is SUPER windy so we didn’t stay out of the tent long. As we couldn’t safely have a fire, we just hunkered down in our tent after making dinner.

That night sleep was probably one of the worst too! With the high winds and on and off rain it was so loud! We woke up with a downpour and the side of the tent on us. So we got up, packed super fast and made breakfast while waiting for the gate to open.

We then made our slow way to the Airport to fly to Kauai! But, first stopping at our friend’s house again to say good-bye and giving the tent back. (no we didn’t get the tent from our friend)

Something important about camping on Oahu Hawaii:
  • A lot of the campgrounds that are privately owned have a gate. This gate closes around 6 or 7. So you will have to plan accordingly or pay a fee to get in.
  • If you plan on car camping, know that you cannot camp just anywhere like you can on the Mainland in places. Make sure you do your research! The campgrounds are worth it! And cheap!
